The snow sure has started to turn on here in Colorado and other parts of the country. I just left Breckenridge and Summit County Colorado this afternoon and it was snowing county wide with forecast for snow throughout the week. Conditions continue to get better and better across the state and country.

Several updated reports for the Mountains include the following:

Durango Mountain Resort, Colorado - Over 4 feet in February and still snowing. Save $10 daily on multi-day lift tickets.
Copper Mountain - Another 2 inches of snow reported this morning and it was snowing all day. Save up to $24 daily on lift tickets.

President's Day at Keystone and The Rockies

Monday of President's day weekend began early with us staying at the original base area of Keystone. Accommodations were very nice through Key to The Rockies with a nice 2 bedroom condo about 250 yards from the lift. The day going to be a good one as we had an additional 2 inches of snow and light snow falling all morning. I worked my way up the mountain and headed to North Peak for a couple of warm up runs then off to the Outback. The snow was easy and soft on top of freshly groomed. The real surprise is the mountain was pretty empty. No lift lines and several runs pretty much had all to myself. I thought the best snow was on the North Peak area as the exposure seems to have protected snow and it felt like they had gotten an inch or two more there than the other parts of the mountain.

With recent snows the conditions continue to get better and better as we get to peak season. The early season lack of snow seems to have put a damper on how busy the areas are. Not necessarily what the resorts want, but it sure is providing good skiing and lack of crowds. Looking for Keystone lift ticket discounts? Be sure to buy in advance and save.

Chris Rudolph RIP, Lost in an avalanche outside of Stevens Pass

As I prepare to ski this morning and check news and notes my heart is heavy as the news of friend and industry associate Chris Rudolph, Stevens Pass Marketing Director, was one of 3 skiers who lost their lives in an avalanche area right outside of the area. This has been a very deadly winter for avalanche lives and it hurts even more when we lose one of ours.

Reports are there were 2 sets of avalanches in Washington yesterday claiming lives. In Colorado avalanches have claimed 6 lives and the Colorado Avalanche center has issued warnings this is the most dangerous avalanche conditions in Colorado for 30 years. Please be safe and live to ski or ride another day. I will make turns today for Chris and others as they passed doing what the loved. Chris always had a smile and was energetic to make sure every thing was done right when any event or promotion was put together at the area. We will miss you.

Resort openings for Weekend for skiers and snowboarders prior to Thanksgiving holiday.

Oh how winter it settling in real nice for skiers and boarders coast to coast. The following is a quick reference on resort openings for Weekend prior to Thanksgiving holiday.

Park City is one of four areas in Utah that are starting up the lifts. It will operate three lifts and seven runs, as well as its all-season mountain coaster and zipline. Most base-area services will be open as well. Make sure to buy your discounted lift tickets in advance for Park City. Additional Utah resorts opening for the season this weekend include Alta, Snowbird - buy lift tickets in advance and save, and Brian Head.

Elsewhere in the Rockies, Vail and Eldora are set to go in Colorado, as are Sipapu in New Mexico and Crystal Mountain, Wash. Snowmass, Colo., opened last weekend, five days ahead of schedule to get the Aspen area going for the season. In Colorado Arapahoe Basin and Loveland have been open since the middle of October and Keystone, Breckenridge, Winter Park and Copper Mountain are all open as well. Be sure to buy discount lift tickets in advance and take advantage of great lodging and travel deals as well.

Wolf Creek, Colo., another area that relies on natural snow, is the first area on the continent to be 100 percent open. It has a 43-50 inch base on 77 trails. They were the first ski area in Colorado to open this year.

Lookout Pass, on the Idaho-Montana border, will get an early start as well. The area received 21 inches of snow last weekend, with more in the forecast from today into weekend. The area will run top to bottom on at least 10 runs.

Recent cold temperatures and periods of heavy snowfall combined with a strong winter weather outlook have led Stevens Pass, Schweitzer, Mt. Hood Meadows, Mission Ridge, and Summit West at Snoqualmie to open Nov. 19.

Stevens Pass is reporting a base of 25-32 inches, and will have its third-earliest opening of the past 25 years. It kicks off daily operations with terrain offerings on the Daisy and Brooks chairlifts. Tickets are $25 due to the limited available terrain.

Mt. Hood Meadows will also open with limited operations. Two lifts are scheduled to run, but more may be added as additional snow—more than a foot—is forecast through today. The resort will announce scheduled lift operations and lift ticket pricing for Saturday by Friday afternoon. Meadows has a minimum base depth of 20 inches. Schweitzer ‘s opening is its earliest since the 198-/85 season, thanks to snowmaking and two feet of natural snowfall this season.

Schweitzer has converted 3.7 million gallons of water into snow, enough to amass 18 inches of snow on Midway and Happy Trails. Terrain will be available for all ability levels, with the Basin Express and Musical Chairs lifts open. Tickets will be $40. Some Nordic trails will be groomed as well. Schweitzer will close down midweek and reopen on Nov. 25 for the weekend, weather permitting.

Summit West, with two feet of base, will run the Pacific Crest, Little Thunder, Dodge Ridge and Julie's lifts through the weekend, close Monday and Tuesday, and reopen Wednesday. Mission Ridge will operate for the weekend, then reopen Nov. 25-27.

In California, Northstar-at-Tahoe and Heavenly both begin the season this year, as does China Peak. Other California areas open include: Mountain High, Mammoth, Boreal, Snow Summit and Bear Mountain

Eastern areas that are opening this weekend include Mount Snow, Okemo, Stowe, and Sugarbush, Vermont; Sugarloaf, Maine; Bretton Woods and Waterville Valley, N.H.; and Belleayre, N.Y.

Midwest areas now open include: Andes Tower Hills and Lutsen Mountains, Minn., join Ski Brule and Trollhaugen, which are reopening, and Wild Mountain.

In the Southeast, Appalachian Ski Mtn. is opening, while Cataloochee and Sugar Mountain resume weekend operations.

Sunshine Village headlines the list of Canadian areas that are poised to open. Sunshine cranks up Nov. 17, a day earlier than initially planned, thanks to a 16-inch snowfall, with more snow in the forecast. The area will operate four lifts on a 27-inch base. Julia Mancuso at Fundraiser For Eldora Race Team

Olympic Medalist and Champion Julia Mancuso will appear in Boulder, Colorado to help raise funds for the Lake Eldora Ski Team.

The event takes place on Monday, November 14 at the historic Boulder Theater, located at 2032 14th Street in Boulder, Colo. Guests can meet Mancuso, a U.S. Ski Team Member, Olympian and freeskiing champion for a special autograph session for the event’s first hour, beginning at 6 p.m.

The evening will feature LERT presenting a film fundraiser to support aspiring athletes with a screening of “The Story” as well as a Best Bet Raffle and a chance to win prizes. All funds raised will support Lake Eldora Race Team ski and snowboard programs.

Killington & Sunday River to Open for Skiing & Snowboarding

The word is both Killington and Sunday River resorts will open tomorrow October 29, 2012. With early snows and opening in Colorado there will be skiing and snowboarding east and west.

At Killington this weekend lift tickets are $39 for adults (19-64), $33 for Young Adults/Seniors (13-18/65+) and $27 for Juniors (7-12). Season pass holders who have not activated their passes may do so at the Snowshed Sales Center beginning at 9 a.m. on Saturday. Beverages, hot dogs, chili and light snacks will be available for purchase at the base of the North Ridge Triple Chair and the K-1 Lodge will be open for ticket sales, lunch, guest service, retail and restrooms.

And the report from Sunday River is -

Sunday River will officially open for the 2011-12 season on Saturday, October 29 at 10:01am for a three-day weekend, marking the fifth year in a row we've been skiing and riding by Halloween.

The Locke Mountain Triple will spin for skiing and riding on the T2 trail on upper Locke Mountain, plus an early-season terrain park set up with a single barrel rail, flat rail and flat box will be available. Lift service will open at 8am on Sunday and 9am on Monday, running to 4pm daily with the last upload at 3:30pm.

Lift tickets for Saturday through Monday will be $29 and available at at Barker Base Lodge, but as a special Halloween treat anyone in costume can ski for free on Monday. No, dressing as a skier or snowboarder does not count, and if you question the validity of your costume we suggest bringing candy which may help convince the ticket staff.

Ski resorts recover from Irene

With Labor Day come and gone the feel of fall is rapidly in the air. Ski sales, fall festivals, shorter days and crisp cool evenings and mornings remind us the ski and snowboard season is right around the corner. Many of our mountain friends in New England, the Catskills and through the east are dealing with the effects of Hurricane Irene. We have one friend who works in the industry lost his house as it was consumed by a raging river. You can see details and more here as well as to contribute.

Resorts are fixing bridges that served as entrances to resort, buildings coming off their foundations, some roofs down and snow making pipes needing repair. All in all resorts are confidant they will be open on time for the first skiers and snowboarders of the new season. Season passes are on sales at great rates coast to coast.

Resorts and others are pitching in to help those in need in the various affected mountain communities. Over the next two weekends, Jiminy Peak Mountain Adventure will be for a good cause. 50 percent of the ticket sales from the Massachusetts ski resort’s two summer activity parks, the Aerial Adventure Park and Mountain Adventure Park, will be donated to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund for Hurricane Irene and to year-round staff members from Jiminy Peak’s sister resort, Bromley Mountain in Manchester, Vt., who were directly affected by damage caused by Irene.

In the Catskills, Hunter Mountain ski area and NY Zipline Adventures staff members on Tuesday hosted children from the hard-hit community of Prattsville, which is located less than 15 miles west of Hunter. The children participated in indoor and outdoor activities, including the NY Zipline Adventure Tower. Transportation, meals and activities were provided for over 100 children. We had a local lodge group from the Scribner Hollow Lodge help this community with meals during the initial recovery.

More and more stories are flowing in and the folks in Vermont are quickly recovering as well as working to get the message our they are open for business as the fall foliage season kicks in.

In the Colorado Rockies we have not had the effects of any storms to create obstacles to late summer fun in the mountains. This week we had reports of a dusting of snow at ski areas from Loveland, and Winter Park to others across the region. Yes, snow making will begin as weather permits this month and October is sure to see the initial wave of ski and snowboard areas opening for the winter 2011.12 season.

Several interesting tidbits of mountain news the last couple of days ranges from lightning strikes at the mountains, a winding down of this past season skiing and snowboarding, as well as ski and snowboard sales a foot.

The July Fourth weekend saw skiing and riding end at the following resorts:

Arapahoe Basin,CO - the word was is was packed and a great time.
Snowbird, UT - Closed for the season as well on Monday the 4th.
Squaw Valley, CA - T shirts were part of the schwag for the historic day as well

Many others are now getting all the snow off and mountain biking, lift rides, alpine slides and more are in full swing.

Mt Abrams in Maine had their base lodge struck by lightening and a fire resulted in significant damage. Resort operators assured they would be ready and operating by the scheduled start of the next ski and snowboard season.

On the retail side we see that the retail arm of Vail Resorts - Specialty Sports Ventures(SSV) - acquired the assets of Outdoor Outlet, LLC, a Wisconsin-based company that owns and operates O2GearShop.com, an online retailer of outdoor and snowsports goods and equipment with more than 2 million total visits last year. This signals a re entry for SSV into e-commerce. And their local store in Boulder, Boulder Ski Deals kicks off the next retail season with their $69 Tent sale. This is always a signal that ski and snowboard sales will be upon us and the next wave of season pass sales are right around the corner.

Durango Mountain Resort and Summer Fun

We just recently returned from a family vacation down to Durango and stayed at the Purgatory Ski Area at Durango Mountain Resort. The village was quaint and very relaxed with plenty to do to keep us busy.We stayed in a nice 2 bedroom Village Center condo that was very comfortable and conveniently located. It proved to be a great visit and there was lots to do that we did not get to.

My 3 sons and I had traveled down as they had never been to the Southwest part of Colorado. The start of this vacation was to visit Durango, Mesa Verde, Silverton and the area. The first day after we arrived, we planned a hike above Silverton and visiting that nearby historic town which is located about 30 minutes from the resort.

Our hike for the first day was to try and make it to the Ice Lakes out of the South Mineral Campground. Yes we encountered snow, and did not quite make it to the top. I had never been to Mesa Verde and day 2 was already planned for visiting Mesa Verde National Park and the Pueblo ruins and cliff dwellings.

The third day we decided to enjoy the resort activities at the village. This included alpine slide, putt putt golf, zip lines, climbing walls, lift serviced mountain biking, chair lift rides to the top, pool and more. It was a great time and we had never done this before. My boys are 15, 13 and 10 and we had no problem staying busy and enjoying the mountain. That evening we went downtown to Durango and joined friends from in town at the Ska Brewery. There was live music and specials for the Taqueria and on beers in an outside setting. What a perfect evening and way to end a fun filled day. A wide selection of the award winning micro brews provided options for everyone. My boys were pleased as the inside pub had big screen TV's and sports for their viewing pleasure.

The mountains have a very different feel in this part of the state compared to the mountains in the central Rockies. My boys noticed and commented on this during our drive down.With all the snow this year we knew we would find snow on the trails and peaks and that proved true all week.

No Lease For Cannon Mountain, For Now

The plan in front of the New Hampshire legislature to lease the Cannon Mountain ski area operations, has been put on hold for at least one year reports the Union Leader. Part of the debate appears to be centered over the fact with recent improvements the area is actually turning a profit for the state. Recent budget shortfalls has the legislature looking for ways to close the gap. The state has and does lease the ski operations at Mount Sunapee.

Memorial Day and the corresponding long holiday weekend signals the start of summer for many. However this year there may be more areas open for skiing and riding than any Memorial Day I can recall. Record snowfalls and cool temps is ensuring winter like conditions at many resorts. Here are a few that we know will be open this weekend.

Colorado will see Arapahoe Basin open with a 100 inch base and a huge Brew Fest Celebration at the base on Sunday. The Basin will stay open Friday - Sundays through Father's Day and maybe later depending on snow. In Aspen the area will open Aspen Mountain as well this holiday weekend with a 71 inch base on the mountain.

California has several areas open as well. In the Lake Tahoe area Kirkwood, Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows will all three be open, while Mammoth Mountain continues operations as well and a huge base of snow still at all four areas.

Eldora Mountain Master Plan for Expansion Approved

Eldora Mountain Resort released to the press and public this week. I had been skiing just the previous Sunday during there FREE lift ticket promotion. It was impressive how well they had handled this crowd that included over 1600 lift tickets that day to skiers and riders taking advantage of the promotion.

In speaking with Jim Spenst the General Manager he stated that Eldora Mountain Resort's plan is to replace some of its old chairlifts, add new high-speed lifts, open more terrain and renovate its lodge has been approved by the U.S. Forest Service.

For those of us who have skied the area over the last 30 years it is exciting news and will enhance significantly the ski experience and provide more reasons to avoid the I-70 traffic especially on weekends.

The master plan calls for improvements to trails, buildings and lifts, but it especially focuses on trying to increase the amount of intermediate terrain available and to reduce the amount of the mountain that needs to be closed in high winds. Winds have been known to limit the resorts operations that parts of this plan addresses.

Eldora wants to add two new lifts on the back side of the resort near the Indian Peaks and Corona lifts, but both would start and end at lower elevations. The two new lifts would also be high-speed, detachable, six-person lifts, which are heavier than the lifts now used at Eldora, and therefore, more stable in windy conditions. Eldora's managers say the combination of heavier lifts and lower elevation will allow them to keep more terrain open more of the time.

The master plan also calls for multiple lifts to be replaced with faster upgrades, including Corona, Challenge and Cannonball. And upgrading the lodge and on-mountain restaurant is also on the list of planned improvements.

While the plan has now been approved by the Forest Service, individual upgrades must still go through a separate approval process that takes into account the environmental impacts of the upgrades. That means it will likely be a year or more before any changes get made at the resort.

I had been skiing just the previous Sunday during their FREE lift ticket promotion. It was impressive how well they had handled this crowd that included over 1600 lift tickets that day to skiers and riders taking advantage of the promotion.

Blue Bird Day and Great Turns at Eldora Mountain

It had been over a week and not turns after the recent set of road trips and I have been getting antsy to ski. Having a season pass to the local mountain Eldora Mountain just 20 miles outside of Boulder has been very convenient to getting mileage and short days in this year. It had been windy in Boulder but the reports were a go at Eldora so up I went yesterday for a few hours ski in the AM.

All season when I have skied at Eldora the conditions have been stellar and there has been little wind. One exception was this past Sunday when lifts were late to open due to wind. It does happen so always a good idea to check in advance when it is blowing in Boulder. Eldora is so often overlooked and provides a great ski and snowboard experience to the local market and those who travel here form out of state.

My day began with a quick trip up the front side and we headed over to the Indian Peaks chair and onto the Corona lift. It had been warm and no snow lately so it really was looking like a high speed groomer kind of day. West Ridge and the glades were open but I opted for the cruisers today. Pick of the day was Muleshoe as it had been groomed and the exposure had softened the snow just right.

I just had the opportunity to ski there, on a 7 day Colorado and Utah road trip. The drive from Steamboat was just over 5 hours and over 300 miles. A straight shot that provided a mix of weather on this particular day. The realignment of the lifts and addition of the orange bubble chair sure made for easier access of the mountain and the ability to get form the bottom of the resort to the upper bowls and terrain.

Sunlight Mountain, Glenwood Springs and the Hot Springs

This weeks journey started last Saturday in Colorado going through Steamboat, Utah - Canyons, Snowbird, Alta and Sundance - has me brought me for a couple of nights to Glenwood Springs. The ride over was a delightful drive in blue skies against snow covered peaks covered just over 300 miles of mostly highway driving in juts over 5 hours. I had left Sundance resort just out of Provo on Thursday afternoon and arrived in Glenwood staying at The Ramada right downtown. The Ramada staff was great and the room was comfortable with a great bed. One note of merit the downstairs 6th Street Grill served up a great burger right before closing to make sure this was one happy guest. It was right at the wire of closing and the staff made sure I got my meal in. A nice selection of local micro-brews and I was a happy camper.

Friday I was greeted again by deep blue skies as I drove the short 25 minutes from in town to Sunlight Mountain Resort. Sunlight Mountain is known as one of Colorado's hidden gems. Tucked between the mega resorts of Vail and Aspen each about an hour in different directions, Sunlight offers a family friendly and laid back ski and snowboard experience. The skiing on this day was perfect soft snow groomed to perfection on the groomed runs and soft cut up powder from the most recent storm earlier in the week. I had never skied the area before and enjoyed the selection of glades that ranged from moderate to the selection of double black tighter and steeper glades. Lift ticket prices are half what the charge at the mega resorts coming in at $50 as the top ticket price. The greater bargain is using the Mountain Sports Club discounts that include 2 for 1, half price and even a free lift ticket offer.

After enjoying the day of skiing I went and gathered the swim suit for a soak in the natural hot Sulphur Springs pools in town. This ritual has played out for ever in Glenwood. The hot springs resort tight on the Colorado River is as soothing and relaxing a way to end a day as one will ever enjoy. Today it is up and at it for the short one hour drive to Vail to ski with my sons before heading back home to Boulder. Look for more up dates and stories from the past week next week.

Snowbird Utah hosts Ski Resort Operators

Snowbird, Utah is the site of this years annual winter trade show for the National Ski Areas Association. After a great start to the season the industry convenes for this conference in a much more upbeat and positive view looking forward. Today's new snow was welcome as the area had received a thaw with rain over the past weekend. The new snow has significantly improved conditions for our First Tracks skiing to start the day. By day two the snow had piled up nicely throughout the area. Below is the early AM shot of Mineral Basin on the backside of Snowbird.

destination, is pleased to announce the launch of two new, state-of-the-art lifts, a new
direct-connect gondola, expanded terrain and vastly improved snowmaking capabilities.
This is the very first phase of the re-creation of Canyons. Anticipate several future
significant announcements including dramatic food and beverage news.

Orange Bubbled, State-of-the-Art Lift – First of its Kind in North America

Just outside the Grand Summit Hotel, the new lift is a marvel of engineering and will be
the first of its kind in North America. One of the most technologically advanced chairlifts
in the world, the bubble enclosed, quad lift offers unmatched visibility, safety, and design
and includes sophisticated comforts such as heated seats. The weather protecting orange
bubble will evoke the feeling of being inside a pair of ski goggles as it transfers guests from
the steps of the Grand Summit Hotel to the mid-mountain Lookout Peak before continuing
uphill to an ending point just south of the current Sun Peak lift. The new lift will be a
visually stunning addition to Canyons and will increase the uphill capacity from basemountain
by a staggering 47%. Most importantly, the new lift will allow skiers to get to
the very top of the mountain in just nine minutes – a far more timely, simple and elegant
fashion than ever before.

New Direct Gondola Connection from the Center of Canyons Village – First Phase of Village
Re-Creation

A new gondola portal has been created, located immediately across the village center from
the Cabriolet Lift, it will create a direct-connect gondola that transports guests from the
center of the village to the Red Pine Lodge. This will provide a far more simple and fluid
process for transporting guests onto and off of the mountain. In addition, the gondola
cabins will be upgraded.

300 Acres of New Skiable Terrain / Iron Mountain Lift

Utah’s largest resort is getting even larger and more exciting. The southern-most part
of Canyons will see the construction of another new detachable quad lift, which will
provide guests with access to an additional 300 acres of northwestern facing skiing and
snowboarding terrain. Ten runs, ranging from intermediate to expert to gladed tree skiing
will bring the total number of runs to an impressive 176. Timberline Lift will allow guests
to ride in either direction and provide easy access to the south side of Canyons. This will
allow guests to move around the mountain more easily.

New Snowmaking Enhancements

In addition to Canyons’ almost 400 natural inches of some of the best snow on earth and
existing snowmaking capabilities, Canyons is constructing a 20 million gallon reservoir to
ensure a consistent skiing and riding surface particularly in the early and late stages of the
season. The reservoir and additional infrastructure investments will more than double The
Canyons already significant snow making capabilities.

Canyons Ski Beach

The Ski Beach, located between the base terminal of the new direct-connect gondola
and the new high speed, state-of-the-art quad lift, will become a gathering place for the
